 Hiring Process

Please note:  Applications are accepted online through the City’s website “Employment” page. For your convenience, there is a computer KIOSK available in Human Resources to complete an online application Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.  Applications can be completed through any computer with internet access and a valid email address (If you do not have an email address, please visit www.yahoo.com or www.gmail.com to set up and obtain a FREE email account).  There is an initial short application that needs to be completed.  If your application meets the minimum qualifications of the position, you will receive an e-mail from the City of Ann Arbor’s Human Resource Services requesting that you return to the City website to complete the final application.  A link to the website will be provided in the email.

The initial application should take about 4-5 minutes and the final application should take between 15-20 minutes.  Human Resource Services is located in the City Center Building, 220 E. Huron, 7th Floor, Ann Arbor, MI 48107.

Hiring processes generally take up to 4 weeks to complete.

We regularly post a list of position openings entitled "Notice of Vacancy".  There are two types of positions available with the City: Regular and Temporary.  We only accept online applications for posted positions.

Position postings are updated regularly.  The Notice of Vacancy lists the position title, a short description of the duties and the qualifications needed for the position.  In addition, the application deadline is listed.   Most positions stay open and posted for two weeks.  Position postings are also regularly broadcast on CTN, Comcast Cable TV, Channel 16 as well as posted on the Michigan Works website at www.michworks.org.

 All of the position postings and other useful information are recorded on our "Position Line" which you can hear by calling 734/994-8106 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.  

Regular Positions

Positions that are considered ongoing in nature are "regular".  They can be full-time or part-time and may or may not be union-affiliated positions.

Temporary Positions

These positions typically last up to 9 months.  They do not include benefits and are not represented by a bargaining unit.

Police and Firefighter Positions

Applications for positions in the Police and Fire Department are only accepted when there is an announced hiring process, at that time, the openings will be listed in our Position Postings.
