My business closed on April 30, 2010, am I still responsible for 2010 summer & winter taxes?
Answer: Yes! If you had personal property in Ann Arbor on December 31, 2009, you are responsible for the 2010 summer and winter taxes. But, your business should be deleted from the 2010 tax roll. Provide written notification to the Assessor's office. You must contact the Treasurer's Office to obtain a final bill.
I haven't purchased any new equipment in the past two (2) years, why do my taxes keep getting higher?
Answer: The majority of business owners who ask this question have made the same mistake! They have failed to file a personal property statement with the Assessor's Office.
I am selling my business in March 2010, who will be responsible for the taxes?
Answer: There is no propration of personal property taxes. If you transfer ownership of the property, the tax liability transfers to the buyer, unless otherwise agreed to by the two parties. If you purchase the equipment and have possession of it when taxes become delinquent (March 1st), the City pursues collection by seizing the property from the current owner. Therefore, if you need to know the amount of taxes due for the current year before selling, call the Assessor's Office @ (734) 794-6530 to have a Jeopardy Assessment calculated.
