Ann Arbor is celebrating its bicentennial in 2024 in many creative, inclusive and unique ways. The Ann Arbor Bicentennial Murals project incorporated abstract art on basketball courts at two Ann Arbor parks -
Bicentennial Park (formerly Southeast Area Park) and
Leslie Park. The Bicentennial Murals Committee selected the top three artist-submitted designs and residents voted on the final design.
After a month-long voting period and over 2,100 votes from community members, the design submitted by artists Amanda Humphrey and Joe Trumpey was chosen.

Both basketball courts are now open for use and the murals are finished.

The design depicts the Huron River and burr oaks in the foreground, echoing features of the bicentennial logo. The background depicts a stylized skyline featuring centers of art, culture, education, and residential life in Ann Arbor. The abstract river represents how our city has changed through time, and its colorful facets as we move into the future.

June 28, 2024 - Public voting ended.
August 10th, 2024 - The artists began installing their design on the basketball court at Leslie Park and will begin at Bicentennial Park (formerly Southeast Area Park) on Thursday, August 22nd. The community is invited to participate in the painting process, with volunteer painting events planned by the city.
August 23rd - 25th, 2024 - Community paint events happened at Bicentennial Park. Thanks to everyone who helped!
