 Calendar of Events & Programs 

 

Gallup & Argo Canoe Liveries offer a number of programs and activities throughout the year.  Programs are geared toward outdoor adventures and exploration on the river. Join a program at the Ann Arbor Canoe Liveries to explore the river environment, discover a new hobby, make new friends and to have fun! 

River Day Camp registration begins February 15th and all other River Program registration begins March 22nd.

 Preschool & Kindergarten Programs

River Kids
River Adventures with you and your little one!  Each week we will explore the river world by paddling a kayak, canoe or paddleboat on Gallup Pond. Experience the thrill of catching fish off the docks and discovering river critters with stories, art and play.  Register for one or more month long sessions!  Ann Arbor residents $52; non-residesnts $64 per child/month, sibling discount available, ages 2 to 4 years with a caregiver.  Pre-registration required.

River Kindergartners
Join us in exploring the Huron River by double kayaks, canoes and paddleboats!  We will discover the river world of turtles, ducks, fish and bugs with boats, hikes, fishing poles, nets, stories, art and play.  Younger siblings ages 1 to 4 years old are also welcome to register.  Ann Arbor residents $52; non-residents $64 per child/month, sibling discount available, ages 5 to 6 years old with a caregiver.  Pre-registration required.

Huron River Clean Up
Saturday, April 17, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join crews from the Great lakes Environmental Research Lab and the EPS to help pick up trash on the river by canoe. Call David Fanslow at 734.741.2353 to pre-register.
Gallup Canoe Livery Opening Weekend!
Sunday, April 18, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. $18/boat, no pre-registration. Celebrate spring on the river!  Paddle a boat while enjoying a free cup of coffee, tea or cocoa on the cold yet beautiful Huron River.
Mother's Day on the River
Sunday, May 9, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. $20/boat, all ages welcome, pre-registration required. Have a river adventure on Mother's Day!  Families bring their Mom for a fun day of paddling boats on Gallup Pond plus make a special gift for Mom.  Bagels, fruit, juice, coffee and boats included.
Very Birdy Evening
Friday, May 14, 6 to 8 p.m. Free, all ages, no pre-registration.  Join City Ornithologist Dea Armstrong as she leads a walk to look for birds in the evening in the Gallup Park and Furstenberg Nature Area. This is the time of year when many birds are just arriving in our area and actively searching for partners and next sites.  And there is the occasional colorful migrant!  Meet at the Gallup Canoe Livery docks.  Please bring binoculars if you have them, but they are not necessary.
Girl Scouts Canoeing, Kayaking & Fishing
Saturday, May 15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. $24/participant, pre-register with the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan. Girl Scouts and their families are invited to take a trip to Gallup Park for canoeing, kayaking and fishing instruction and fun on the Huron River. 
Women's Fly Fishing Lessons
Saturday, May 22, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pre-register with the Huron River Watershed Council 734.769.5123 or msmith@hrwc.org. Ann Arbor Trout Unlimited provides this opportunity to try fly fishing and learn casting, knot tying, fly identification, entomology, and wading with women instructors. We have rods, waders, flies and will be serving lunch.  All you need is your willingness and a pair of polarized sunglasses.  Please wear appropriate clothes for the weather.  Details will be sent to you with registration.  Meet at the Mass Shelter in Gallup Park.  Limited to 15 women, ages 15 or older.
Carp Day
Sunday, May 23, 1 to 3 p.m. $20/boat, all ages welcome, pre-registration required.  Each spring as the river warms, the carp swim to the shallows of Gallup Pond to spawn.  Paddling canoes and kayaks we will search for carp fins and tails as they swirl through the water.  Fish art and snacks will complete the fun.
NEW!  Women's Kayaking Club
Join us the this new program the fourth Wednesday of every month May 26, June 23, July 28, August 25, September 22 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Gallup Park if forming a kayaking club for women of all experiences to get together on the river once a month.  Meet up at the Gallup Livery and we'll explore different parts of the Huron River with food, literature, science, and fun.  Bring your own boat or rent from the livery, join us for one or all, no pre-registration required.
Red Fish Blue Fish Teach Kids to Fish
Saturday, June 12, 10 to 11:30 a.m. $5/child, all ages welcome with an adult, pre-registration required. Join us for the State of Michigan's Free Fishing Weekend for our state offers some of the finest freshwater fishing with more than 36,350 miles of rivers and streams.  Fishing poles, bait and instruction are provided so just bring your family and friends and let's go fishing!
Full Moon Paddle on Gallup Pond
Saturday, June 26, 8 to 11 p.m. $18/boat, bring a flashlight, no pre-registration.  The Gallup Canoe Livery stays open late to celebrate the full moon and the start of the summer season.
**30TH ANNUAL HURON RIVER DAY**
Sunday, July 11, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. FREE FUN FOR EVERYONE!  Come celebrate this annual event featuring the wonderful Huron River.  The festivities begin in the morning with the Gallup Gallop Run.  The afternoon activities from 12 to 4 p.m. include $5 canoe/kayak rentals, children's activities, a butterfly house where you can hand feed butterflies, river exhibits, musical entertainment, food, fishing, geocaching and much, much more.  No pre-registration.  Sponsored by DTE Energy Foundation.
Turtle Paddle
Sunday, July 25, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. $20/boat, all ages, pre-registration required.  Explore the wetlands and waters of the Huron River as we search for Michigan turtles by canoe or kayak.
Full Moon Paddle on Gallup Pond
Saturday, August 21, 8 to 11 p.m. $18/boat, bring a flashlight, no pre-registration. What could be more serene than paddling a canoe under the light of the moon? As we watch the wildlife settle in for the night, the moon will rise to light our way as we float up and down Gallup Pond.

Special Activities at Argo Canoe Livery

QuickStart Your Kayak Instruction
Sunday, April 18th from 3 to 6 p.m. in Mack Pool.  Minimum 14 years of age, bring your own clean equipment or rent from us.  QuickStart is a brief, 3-hour introduction to paddling a kayak.  Students are presented with basic information on dressing to paddle safety, potential hazards and simple rescues. A paddle skill is presented and practiced, allowing students to safely and comfortably maneuver on still water.  Expanding Horizons Kayaking will be providing this quality, fun and experiential kayak instruction.  On-line registration opens February 15th.
Boy Scouts Kayaking
Saturday, May 22, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Calling all Boy Scouts to earn their Kayaking BSA at the Argo Canoe Livery.  Register with Great Sauk Trail Council Boy Scouts.
Bonfire Paddle on Argo Pond
Saturday, June 5, 8 to 11 p.m. $18/boat.  Paddle a canoe or kayak up to a blazing fire floating in the middle of Argo Pond!  No pre-registration for the Argo Canoe Livery stays open late on this special spring night for paddling on 2-mile Argo Pond.
Full Moon Paddle on Argo Pond
Saturday, July 24, 8 to 11 p.m. $18/boat, bring a flashlight, no pre-registration.  The Argo Canoe Livery stays open late for the moon to guide your way as you paddle up and down the 2-mile Argo Pond section of the Huron River.
