 Calendar of Events 

 

Gallup Park offers a number of programs and activities throughout the year.  Programs are geared toward outdoor adventures and exploration on the river and in our river parks. Join a program at the Ann Arbor Canoe Liveries to explore the river environment, discover a new hobby, make new friends and to have some fun!

Preschool Programs at Gallup Park

River Kids: Spring 
Wednesdays, April 16, 23, 30
10 to 11:30 am  
$48/$39 res dis per child/month, ages 2-4 yrs w/caregiver

Usher in the Spring discovering Gallup Park!  Explore islands, butterfly gardens, and our new river themed playground.  As the weather warms we will have adventures on paddleboats looking for signs of spring on the river.

River Tots

Little ones climb in your stroller and off we go!  Together we’ll take a brisk stroll for exercise on Gallup Park’s paved trails.  Each week we will investigate a different part of the river world with art, stories, songs, and discovery.   Free coffee and conversation for the caregivers will all be part of the fun.

Come on down to the river for the water has warmed and the fish are in the shallows.  Each week we will explore the river by paddling a kayak, canoe, or paddleboat on Gallup Pond.  The children will have the fun experience of catching fish off the docks with a bamboo rod.  Discovering rivers with art, stories, and play will round out the fun.

Kayaking Kindergartners *NEW*

NEW program for 5 and 6 year olds!  Venture farther down the river to discover Gallup Pond in double kayaks, canoes and paddleboats.  Fish for bluegill, sunfish and bass to set up a fish tank in the canoe livery.   Look for and learn about turtles, birds, fish and river bugs with stories, art and play.

Special Activies at Gallup Park

Huron River Clean Up
Saturday, April 12
9am to 2pm

Join crews from the Great Lakes Environmetal Research Lab and the EPA to help pick up trash on the river and in Ann Arbor parks along the Huron River. Call David Fanslow at 734-741-2353 to register.

*NEW* Bagels and Boats
Last Sunday of each month, April 27, May 25, June 29, July 27, August 31
9am to 11am
$20 per boat

Munch on bagels, fruit and juice before venturing out on boats and fishing off the docks. Double and single kayaks, canoes and paddleboats are the boat choices. Learn how to paddle a boat and discover the wonderful river world. Programs led by experienced canoe livery staff.

Canoe and Kayak Auction
Saturday, May 10

Public auction of used and damaged boats. Featured this year are double and single kayaks along with our aluminum canoes.

Evening Bird Walk
Friday, May 30
6pm to 8pm

Free, all ages. Join city Ornithologist Dea Armstrong as she leads a walk to look for birds in the evening in the Gallup Park and Furstenberg Nature Area.

Early Bird Walk

Summer Solstice and Full Moon Paddle
Friday, June 20

$18 per boat, bring a flashlight

Celebrate the first day of summer out on the Huron River! Let the moon light your way as you paddle on the 2.5 mile long Gallup Pond. The Gallup Canoe Livery stays open late on this special longest day of the year. No preregistration needed just come on out to the Gallup Canoe Livery.

*NEW* Huron River Canoe Challenge

The Huron River Canoe Challenge is a joint venture between the Michigan Canoe Racing Association and the Huron River Watershed Council. The goal of the race is to familiarize the sport of canoe racing to residents in Southern Michigan while also promoting the many uses of the Huron River. MCRA Professional C-2 Race, Amateur 'Fun Run' (Open to anyone wanting to race) and MCRA Professional C-1 Race. For more information visit www.miracing.com and www.hrwc.org.

***** 28th Huron River Day Festival *****

Free!

Come celebrate this annual event featuring the wonderful Huron River! The festivities begin in the morning with the Gallup Gallop Run and guided paddling trips. The afternoon activities include free canoe/kayak, children's activities, live animal programs, river exhibits, musical entertainment, ice cream and much, much more. Festival sponsored by DTE Energy Foundation.

Wildlife by Kayak
Sunday, July 20

$22 per boat

Explore the wetlands and waters of the Huron River from the perspective of local wildlife, by canoe or kayak. Discover the hiding places of birds, turtles and amphibians, while you learn about water quality, wetland function and watershed health.

Red Fish Blue Fish Teach Kids to Fish
Thursday, July 24 OR Thursday, August 14

$5/child, all ages welcome with adult

Bring your children out for some basic fishing fun! Instruction, poles and bait are provided. Meet on the docks at the Gallup Canoe Livery. Preregistration required.

Moonlight Canoe/Kayak Float
Saturday, August 16
8pm to 11pm
$18/boat, bring a flashlight

What could be better than paddling a canoe under the light of the moon? Join us as we watch the wildlife settle in for the night, the moon will rise to light our way as we float up and down Gallup Pond. The Gallup Canoe Livery stays open late on this special summer night.

Pirate Week Paddle
Monday-Friday, August 18-22
9am to 9pm
$18/boat, all ages

Come be pirate floating in a boat on the Gallup Sea! Each boat rental will be given a pirate map to look for lost treasure hidden on an island for you to discover on your paddle. Dare to make your own pirate hat and eye patch, walk the plank and dig for gold treasure to complete your fun in pirate week.

Bonfire in the River and Full Moon Paddle
Saturday, May 17
7pm to 10pm
$18/boat

Paddle a canoe or kayak up to a blazing fire floating in the middle of Argo Pond! Venture out on the water at night with only firelight and moonlight to guide your way. The Argo Canoe Livery stays open late on this special summer moonlit night for paddling on 2-mile Argo Pond. No preregistration, just come on out to the Argo Canoe Livery.

Kayak Instruction - Beginner Plus Lesson and Safety Practice
Tuesdays, May 13 and 20 OR Tuesdays, June 17 and 24
6pm to 9pm
$120/person, ages 14 or older

Meets at Argo Canoe Livery. Quiet World Sports brings us a comprehensive beginner kayak program that will insure you get started in kayaking the right way. In the first session students learn all about the various kayaks and gear and learn solid paddling skills. The second session gives students a chance to practice and refine their skills while adding some advanced technique. Also during the second session instructors will demonstrate important safety skills and make sure all the students have their questions answered about what would be the best kayak for them. All gear provided. Pre-registration required.

Full Moon Paddle on Argo Pond
Saturday, July 19
8pm to 11pm
$18/boat, bring a flashlight

Let the moonlight your way as you paddle up and down the 2-mile Argo Pond section of the Huron River. The Argo Canoe Livery stays open late on this special summer moonlit night. No preregistration, just come on out to the Argo Canoe Livery.
