The Annual Surface Treatment Program begins in mid June and reaches completion by mid August.
Work crews from the Transportation Division perform necessary prep work in the previous construction season. This includes sealing cracks, filling holes, repairing curb and gutter and performing base repair on those streets which are scheduled to receive a surface treatment this year.
There are three types of surface treatment scheduled for this year:
1. Micro-Surface: A micro-surface is a process designed primarily for major roadways which experience heavy traffic. It is a two-step process intended to alleviate rutting, which is a typical distress on a heavily traveled road. The first application fills the ruts and levels the surface, while the second application provides an improved driving surface.
2. Slurry Seal: A slurry seal is a one-step process which is designed for local roads which may not experience the rutting associated with heavy traffic. A slurry seal is designed for a road which has moderate wear, and relatively few existing surface flaws. An application of slurry seal provides an improved driving surface.
3. Cape Seal: A cape seal is a two step process which is designed for local roads which have moderate to heavy wear and moderate surface flaws. The first stage of a cape seal is an application of asphalt emulsion ( a tar-like liquid) immediately followed by an application of fine stone chips. This "chip seal" is a rolling operation which does not require road closure and creates a temporary surface which traffic can drive on immediately. The second step is actually an application of slurry seal. This slurry seal then completely covers the stone chips to provide an improved driving surface.
In each case, the surface treatment is designed to improve the aesthetics of the road as well as to improve its skid coefficient -- which means the road looks and performs better -- not to mention the fact that the life of the road is extended 5-7 years.
In addition, it is important to note that every $1 spent on maintenance programs such as the Annual Surface Treatment Program helps save $6 in future expenses.
To notify the public, letters will be sent to all local residents and businesses affected by the proposed work. In addition, all residents and businesses will receive an informational flyer the day before any work begins.
Also, some of the high volume streets will be done at night to minimize inconvenience to motorists.
