Building Board of Appeals

​​​​Building Code Variances

The purpose of the Building Board of Appeals is for reconsideration of a code official opinion or to hear a variance request from the requirements of the State Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing codes after being denied a permit application for construction.

Applications

Applications for variances of building code regulations are available by navigating to stream.a2gov.org​ and searching for Building Board of Appeals.

Completed applications should be submitted a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the meeting date to allow adequate time to process according to the laws, guidelines, and regulations.

Fees

The application fee for single-family residential homes is $250.
The application fee for all other buildings is $500.

Meeting Information

The Building Board of Appeals meetings are typically held the third Thursday of the month.  They are located at 301 East Huron Street, Larcom City Hall, in the Council Chambers on the 2nd Floor.  There is on-street metered parking available along Ann St. (2 hour m​aximum) or parking structures at Ann & Main and Fourth and Washington for your convenience.

The Building Board of Appeals schedule, agenda and minutes are available at the City of Ann Arbor's Legislative Information Center. 

  • Access the calendar page.
  • Select "Building Board of Appeals" from the drop-down menu at the top of the page.
  • Agenda packet information can be found by clicking the "Meeting Details" link for each meeting date.

Michigan Barrier Free Design Rule Exception

Applications are available through this li​nk.  All processing is handled by the State of Michigan. No local variances are permitted nor will staff be able to assist you with the State's process for the appeals.  You may call the Barrier Free Design office with the State of Michigan at 517.241.9303.
