Ann Arbor construction and utility closures

When: Postponed - TBA

Why: Ric-Man Construction Inc., on behalf of the City of Ann Arbor, will bypass the sanitary sewer in the Ashley Street and Washington Street intersection to accommodate construction of sanitary sewer in the First Street and Washington Street intersection. 

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • All southbound Ashley Street vehicle traffic will be detoured by traveling east on Huron Street, then south on Main Street, then west on Liberty Street.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways and parking lots within the closure will be maintained via northbound Ashley.
  • Alley access will be maintained off Liberty.
  • Westbound Washington Street traffic will be required to turn northbound onto Ashley Street.

When: 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 – 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026

Why: DTE will be closing State Street for an emergency collapsed conduit repair.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Southbound vehicles traveling on State Street will be detoured west on East Hoover Avenue, south on South Main Street, east on East Stadium Boulevard, and back to State Street.
  • Northbound vehicles traveling on State Street will be detoured east on Stimson Street, north on South Industrial Highway, west on East Stadium Boulevard, north on Packard Street, and back to State Street.
  • Sidewalk traffic on the will not be affected.

When: 7 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2 – 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026

Why: Corby, on behalf of DTE, will be closing the two east bound lanes of Packard Street for an emergency gas main repair.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Phase 1: Starting Thursday, Jan. 29 – Sunday, Feb. 1 both eastbound lanes and center turn lane will be closed overnight. Eastbound vehicles traveling on Packard Street will be shifted to one lane in the westbound lane.
  • Westbound Packard Street will be reduced to one lane.
  • Phase 2: Starting Monday Feb. 2, the center turn lane and both most center lanes in each direction will be closed. Both directions of traffic will be reduced to one lane.
  • Sidewalk traffic on the south side of Packard Street will be detoured to the north side of the road.
  • The lane closures will cause traffic delays so drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes.

When: 7 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3 – 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026

Why: Hi Ball Co., will be closing East William Street for a crane to install signage onto the building.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Eastbound vehicles traveling on East William Street will be detoured south on South Fifth Avenue, east on Packard Street, north on South Division Street, and back to East William Street.
  • Westbound vehicles traveling on East William Street will be detoured north on South Division Street, west on East Liberty Street, south on South Fifth Avenue, and back to East William Street.
  • People using the sidewalk on the north side of East William Street will be detoured to the south side of the road.

When: Monday, Jan. 12– Saturday, May 30, 2026

Why: The University of Michigan’s South Fifth Housing and Dining project has completed paving of both vehicle lanes of South Division Street adjacent to their development south of Benjamin Street. The southbound vehicle traffic lane from Hill Street to Benjamin Street and both the northbound and southbound cycle traffic lanes from Hill Street to East Hoover Avenue will remain closed until final paving and striping can take place in the spring of 2026. 

Detour or other travel impacts:

  • Southbound traffic on South Division Street will be detoured east onto Hill Street, southeast onto Packard Street, south onto State Street, and back west onto East Hoover Avenue.
  • Northbound traffic on South Division Street between Hill Street and East Hoover Avenue will be maintained.
  • Northbound cycle traffic on South Division Street will be detoured west on East Hoover Avenue, north on Greene Street, east on Hill Street, and north back to South Division Street.
  • Southbound cycle traffic will be detoured west onto Hill Street, south on Greene Street, and east back to East Hoover Avenue.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained on the east side of South Division Street.
  • Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.

When: 7 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 7, 2026 – Fall 2026

Why: Ric-Man Construction Inc., on behalf of the City of Ann Arbor, will be microtunneling a sanitary sewer along First Street and Washington Street. The city’s engineering consultants, Stantec and OHM Advisors, will be overseeing construction efforts and communications.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • All southbound First Street vehicle traffic will be detoured by traveling east on Huron Street, then south on Main Street, then west on Liberty Street.
  • All northbound First Street vehicle traffic will be detoured by traveling east on Liberty Street, then north on Main Street, then west on Huron Street.
  • Washington Street vehicle traffic shall find alternate routes.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways, parking lots and alleys within the closure will be maintained.

When: 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2025 - 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2028

Why: South University will be fully closed to vehicular traffic to facilitate construction of a new high-rise residential building.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Vehicles traveling east on South University Avenue will detour south on Church Street, then east on Willard Street, then north on South Forest Avenue to South University Avenue.
  • Vehicles traveling west on South University Avenue will be detoured south on South Forest Avenue, then west on Willard Street, then north on Church Street to South University Avenue.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour, however, access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.
  • Pedestrians and bicyclists will be detoured along the north side of South University Avenue and within a covered pedestrian tunnel between East University Avenue and South Forest Avenue.

Why: The private development at 711 Church Street will require a lane closure of the northbound traffic lane of Church Street to construct their new apartment building. 

Detours and other travel impacts:

  • Northbound Church Street traffic will be detoured west onto Hill Street, north onto East University Avenue, ease onto Willard Street, and then north back to Church Street.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the west side of Church Street.
