Celebrate Earth Month with Free Community Events

The April schedule is packed with events to bring together community around climate action
In honor of Earth Month, the City of Ann Arbor Office of Sustainability and Innovations (OSI) is rolling out 30 days of celebrations aimed at inspiring residents to take action for a healthier planet. With a dynamic mix of community events, educational workshops and eco-friendly challenges, OSI is inviting individuals, families and local businesses to join in achieving the A2ZERO goal of a sustainable and equitable future for the community.
Highlights of OSI’s Earth Month events include:
- Food Waste Prevention Week, April 7–13: Join the celebration to learn more about how to prevent food waste at home and take action in your community. Visit foodwastepreventionweek.com for the full calendar of events and ways to make a difference. And stay tuned to OSI's social media pages for food waste tips, tricks and resources all week long!
- Sustainability in Ann Arbor Public Schools — A Look at King Elementary, Wednesday, April 9, 6:30–8 p.m., King Elementary: Join OSI along with representatives from Ann Arbor Public Schools to learn about sustainability improvements slated for King Elementary and resources for improving sustainability in your own home.
- Sustainability and Innovations Coffee Meetup: Moving Beyond Shareholder Primacy, Wednesday, April 16, 8–9:30 p.m., Venue at 4M: Short termism and shareholder primacy have dominated the business landscape for the past four decades with devastating consequences for society and the environment. Join OSI to learn more about what it will take to move beyond this structure and re-embed purpose through reforms to major economic institutions, including business education.
- Park Adoption Day, Friday, April 18, 3–5 p.m., Bicentennial Park: Join OSI in cleaning up our adopted park, Bicentennial! Volunteers are welcome — come prepared to get dirty and make a difference!
- FreeTree Giveaway, Saturday, April 19: While all available slots have been filled, residents who are interested in participating in the program are encouraged to join the 10,000 Trees email list to be the first to hear when the next event is planned or to volunteer with the program.
- Buhr Park Pocket Forest Dedication, Sunday, April 20, 1–3 p.m.: This event is an opportunity to thank many amazing volunteers, partners and funders and see how the baby forest is coming along after its first winter. Location: Buhr Park, 2751 Packard St. Ann Arbor, 48108 — the pocket forest is along the asphalt pathway, just past the ice rink.
- Climate Café, Monday, April 21, 6–7:30 p.m., Argus Farm Stop (Packard): Join OSI and the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science and the Arts for a relaxed, welcoming space to talk about climate, community and what comes next. Whether you're curious, concerned or already involved, this is a chance to connect with others, explore local resources and take steps toward a more sustainable future. Food provided.
- Earth Day with the EPA, Tuesday, April 22, 4:30–6 p.m., 2565 Plymouth Road: Learn more about the emissions-reducing work happening at the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory right here in Ann Arbor, as well as some tips and tricks for how you can save money, improve health and reduce emissions!
- Sustainability Forum — SA2T, Thursday, April 24, 6–7:30 p.m., Ann Arbor District Library Downtown Branch: Join OSI for this panel and discussion on the Sustaining Ann Arbor Together (SA2T) neighborhood grant program.
- SFBC Gathering — Creating a Sustainable Food Business Culture of Dignity, Friday, April 25, 2–2:30 p.m., Zingerman’s Roadhouse: Join the Ann Arbor Sustainable Food Business Coalition for an afternoon of dynamic conversation and networking featuring Lisa Schultz and Kendall Monaghan of Zingerman's Roadhouse on building a thriving and sustainable food business where your team feels empowered, valued and integral to your success.
- Electronics Takeback Event, Saturday, April 26: While this event has sold out already, we encourage you to stay tuned by joining the Electronics Takeback Event email list to get notified when the next event is announced.
- Ann Arbor Earth Day Festival, Sunday, April 27, 1–4:30 p.m., Leslie Science & Nature Center: This free, family-friendly event features displays, hands-on activities, live entertainment, green building and commuting technologies, sustainable agriculture and more. “This April, we’re focusing on the power of collective action,” said Missy Stults, director of the City of Ann Arbor Office of Sustainability and Innovations. “Ann Arbor has a history of coming together as a community to make meaningful environmental impact, and we’re excited to continue encouraging this tradition as we usher in Earth Day 2025.”
