History
Ann Arbor's city parks sit on the ancestral and traditional homelands of several indigenous Native peoples. Read a land acknowledgement from the city and learn more about the early history of the land here.
The land for Baxter Park was acquired from the University of Michigan in 1980. Thirty thousand dollars were used to initially develop the park, half of which came from the city and half of which came from an MDEQ grant. The park was officially dedicated on July 22, 1982, after the park was further developed with the addition of the basketball court, play area, benches and more. These improvements totaled about $30,000. In 1999 a series of improvements were made to the park, including a new play structure, swings and picnic table, totaling over $30,000.
