South Maple Park

Overview

South Maple Park is a 7.83 acre park off of Liberty Street, just west of South Maple Road on the city's western edge. View the Ann Arbor Parks and Nature Areas Map for location context. The park contains tennis courts (with overstripping for pickleball), a play area, sprawling open grass fields and a wooded area separating the two portions of the park. An accessible asphalt trail connects to the park from the subdivision to the south of the park and east.

Park Notices

Unless otherwise posted per City Council resolution, when a park is closed, no person shall remain in or enter it other than to quietly sit or walk.

The park has a small parking lot off of Liberty Street.

The park is accessible by foot and bicycle using bike lanes and a sidewalk along Liberty Street. There are sidewalks along South Maple Road but no bike lanes. There are some bike racks in the park at the Liberty entrance near the tennis courts and at the playground.

Public Transportation

History

Ann Arbor's city parks sit on the ancestral and traditional homelands of several indigenous Native peoples. Read a land acknowledgement from the city and learn more about the early history of the land here.

The land that comprises the eastern portion (2 acres) of South Maple Park was acquired by the City of Ann Arbor in 1976 using funds from the 1971 G.O.P.B. Bond issue for Park Development and Acquisition. The park was intended to provide public parkland to the housing complexes adjacent to the park, which had previously been without parkland within walking distance. Construction on the park began in 1976. The tennis courts were built in 1979, on top of a water reservoir that provided a large, flat area to build them on.
