Ann Arbor's Water Treatment Plan is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The plant itself was commissioned in 1938 and is located in the Water Hill neighborhood and processes 4,300,000,000 gallons of water each year.
85% of Ann Arbor's drinking water comes from the Huron River via Barton Pond with the remaining 15% coming from wells.
Staff test for over 100 contaminants, conducting 145,000 such tests each year, looking for things like:
- Disinfection Byproducts
- Volatile Organic Compounds
- Inorganic contaminants
- Radiological contaminants
- Bacteria
- Metals
For less than ½ cent per gallon, our customers get:
- Reliability: our facility runs 24/7
- Safety: 100% compliance with safe water drinking standards including lead
- Excellent service: Routine and emergency maintenance of over 400 miles of pipes
- Great taste: Repeatedly voted best tasting water in Michigan by the American Water Works Association
