Dams and Hydros

The water treatment services unit operates and maintains four dams located on the Huron River: Barton, Argo, Geddes, and Superior. Two of the dams (Barton and Superior) generate hydroelectric power. At peak power production these two dams can create enough electricity to power 1500 homes. All four dams are operated to maintain pond levels. Each of the dams has an automatic controller designed to maintain the pond level within a 0.1 foot range.

Please note: Barton Dam embankment construction work will begin in early March 2025. The dam is adjacent to Barton Pond, Barton Nature Area, Bird Hills Nature Area and trails to and along the Huron River and, due to construction, public access within certain areas will be restricted. This project is required for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) compliance and will include stabilizing a berm on the downstream slope of the right embankment to address seepage and stability concerns.
