Sanitary Sewer Overflow Caused by Contractor Actions
ANN ARBOR, Michigan, July 2, 2021 —Midafternoon on Thursday, July 1, 2021, City of Ann Arbor Public Works Staff responded to a complaint of running water from a manhole lid near the intersection of Jefferson and Main Streets. Upon inspection, it was found that the overflow was being caused by a blockage in the pipe due to a contractor conducting lining work. An estimated 60 gallons of sewage was released onto the road surface, flowing into the storm drain, and ultimately finding its way to the Huron River, via Allen Creek, underground.
Debris was removed from the affected area and lime was applied for disinfection of the contaminants.
In accordance with regulatory protocols, City of Ann Arbor staff notified the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.
