Citizen Participation
One of the most important jobs of the Ann Arbor City Planning Commission is to provide an opportunity for the public to offer constructive comments on items before it, and then to take those comments into account when making its recommendations or decisions.
As a citizen, you can take an active role in shaping Ann Arbor by participating in the planning and development process. Information on public hearings and tracking development petitions is provided below.
For tips on communicating effectively when attending meetings and conversing with planning staff, planning commissioners, developers, and fellow residents see the Citizens Guide to Effective Communication.
Public Hearings
- 15 days before a hearing, a notice is published in the Washtenaw Legal News (visit www.legalnews.com, click on Public Notice Quick Search, and type in "City of Ann Arbor PH")
- 15 days before a hearing, postcards describing the project and providing the date and time of the hearing are sent to property owners, residents, and registered neighborhood and business associations located within 300 feet of the property being considered.
-
One week before the hearing, a sign is prominently posted on the property being considered. The sign contains:
- The name of the petition
- The time and place of the hearing
- How to get more information
- The date the property was posted
