Archived News Release: May 12, 2022 - The Ann Arbor community can meet their first responders and see, learn and experience how they serve and protect at a fun-filled, annual event. All are invited to the City of Ann Arbor Public Safety Open House Saturday, May 21, 2022, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., on Fifth Avenue between Huron and East Ann streets, alongside fire station No. 1, 111 N. Fifth Ave.
Kids and kids-at-heart can tour police cars and fire trucks; see the motorcycles; meet the K9s; and so much more at this FREE, festival-like event. There will also be a live demonstration of a vehicle extrication as well as some special snacks.
And though it certainly can be, the event doesn't have to be all fun and games. “If you're considering a career in law enforcement or firefighting or just want to learn more about these career paths," notes Ann Arbor Police Sgt. Mark Pulford, “this is your chance to meet our officers and firefighters and even visit the AAPD recruiting booth to explore a future with our department. We hope to see everyone there!" The police department will also hold an in-person recruiting seminar immediately following, at 2 p.m. in the Ann Arbor Justice Center, which is across the street from the fire station. The seminar will feature a brief presentation on a career with AAPD and answer any questions.
The Ann Arbor Fire Department has 72 firefighters assigned to three shifts. Firefighters work a 24-hour shift that starts at 7 a.m. and goes until 7 a.m. the following day. Firefighters are then off duty for 48 hours. Minimum daily staffing is 18 personnel assigned to five stations. Visit AAFD online at www.a2gov.org/fire.
There are 122 sworn Ann Arbor police officers included in the overall staff of 156 . The AAPD consists of many services and divisions, including a detective section, traffic services unit, K9, motorcycle and bicycle patrols, as well as a community engagement unit. The City of Ann Arbor Public Safety Open House has become a staple over the years, providing a fun, inclusive opportunity for the community and police and fire personnel to connect. Both departments are committed to outreach and engagement, offering station tours, ride alongs, speaking events at schools and neighborhood meetings and volunteer programs.
