Ann Arbor Police & Fire Departments Share Holiday Safety Information

December 11, 2024 - The holiday season is here, and the Ann Arbor Police and Fire departments want all community members to stay safe. The departments are providing the following safety tips to promote a peaceful holiday season.

“Nearly half of holiday decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source such as candles. Some simple safety items can ensure safe and joyful holiday season," said Ann Arbor Fire Chief Mike Kennedy.

“The holiday season is when we can all work together to minimize opportunities and keep from being victimized. Locking your car doors, being vigilant in your neighborhoods, removing packages delivered to your residence are some tips the police department recommends. Your police department supports you and wishes you the best during this festive season," said Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre Anderson.

Fire safety

  • Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns. Make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily.

  • Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like real candles.

  • Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires.

  • Read manufacturer's instructions for the number of light strands to connect.

  • Water your Christmas tree every day. A dry Christmas tree can burn very hot and very fast.

  • Make sure your tree is at least 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents. Also, make sure your tree does not block exits.

  • Get rid of your tree after Christmas or when it is dry.

Public safety

  • Always lock your vehicle and keep valuables out of view or in your trunk. Thieves are looking for easy opportunities and it only takes seconds for a thief to rummage through an unlocked vehicle.

  • If you're out shopping, park in a well-lit area and stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. This means avoid being distracted by your electronic devices.

  • If you're not able to be home when a package is delivered, consider asking a neighbor to hold it for you or having the package shipped to work. Use options to schedule deliveries for when you are home.

  • Be cautious of unsolicited phone calls or emails requesting donations or personal information.

  • Don't leave your garage door open and unattended.

  • If you are traveling for the holidays, ask a neighbor to watch your home and avoid posting travel plans on social media.

  • Report suspicious activity by immediately calling 911 or nonemergency dispatch at 734.994.2911.
