Fall to Winter 2023 - Public Engagement
Spring 2024 - Finalize Design; Bid Project
Summer 2024 - Construction & Restoration

Why is this project being done?

Filling gaps in the sidewalk system is consistent with both Ann Arbor's Moving Together Towards Vision Zero transportation plan and Complete Streets Policy. Providing sidewalks where they currently do not exist can:

  • Improve pedestrian safety

  • Encourage active transportation and community health

  • Provide a continuous user experience

  • Provide more transportation options

  • Eliminate the practice of walking along the road and across traffic

Sidewalk gaps throughout Ann Arbor were prioritized for completion based on a system of safety, proximity to pedestrian destinations, roadway classification adjacent to the existing sidewalk gap, resident requests, and other related criteria. For more information, visit the New Sidewalk FAQ webpage.

Possible impact to residents

  • Temporary lane closure adjacent to eastern sidewalk construction, northbound traffic will be shifted to center lane (two-way traffic on Stone School Road will still be maintained).

  • Construction will unavoidably generate dust and noise and many other inconveniences. In addition, you may see utility flags, surveyor stakes, and protection fences located along the roadway which are important to construction and should not be disturbed.

  • Reconstruction of driveway aprons and some landscaping removals within the path of the new sidewalk within city of right of way is required.

  • The project team will make every effort to avoid property impacts and will coordinate directly with specifically impacted property owners as needed.

  • Access to driveways will be maintained except for periods when the sidewalk construction work is in the immediate vicinity of the driveway.
  • Trash, recycle and compost collection, emergency vehicle access, and mail delivery will be maintained throughout the project.
